A reliable source close to Rihanna has reported that she flew into Barbados last night to recuperate from her injuries and escape the drama that has swirled around her since Sunday. There's no 'official' word on her arrival as yet but we highly doubt there will be under the circumstances and we figure that unlike previous trips where she hit the beach and Chefette and Club Xtreme, that she will probably stick close to home and family this time around. We would too. Welcome home Ri-ri - get well soon!
That is some good news out of a bad situation - and to add to the good stuff, here are some shots of islandistas (and a few islandistos) shining on various red carpets around the globe this past week.
The Grammys of course were the hottest ticket in the world this week and Barbadian singers Shontelle (T-Shirt) and Hal Linton were up in the do at various Grammy parties and hanging out with stars, some of island extraction like Busta Rhymes.
Other island folk hit the red carpet for Victoria's Secret's 'What Is Sexy? party at the Bowery in New York and Elle's Style Awards in London.
What in de hecking heck is Genevieve Jones wearing here? No really... WHAT IS IT? Is it tourist chic - judging from the socks with the high-heeled sandals here? And as for the chiffon shirt with the bow in front... man I done... next!
Tyson Beckford was also there - love the dapper waistcoat roughened up with the dark jeans.
Lenny Kravitz' girl child was in a gold lame cape and still refuses to brush her hair. Zoe, just grow locks like your mum and be done with it since clearly you and combs don't 'gree. What can we say? Her island heritage (Bahamas in case you were wondering - she's a Roker on her paternal granny's side) is two generations back - that's our only comfort.
Trini-descended Tatyana Ali acquitted herself much better today at the pre-gala for the NAACP Image Awards in a sexy blue satin dress.
Over in London, Jamaican-Brits Naomie Harris (Pirates of the Caribbean) and Alexandra Burke graced the red carpet for the Elle Style Awards.
Sexy and sleek look for Naomie and I really love Alex Burke's sailboat dress with the shiny stripes - folks on other blogs were buffing it, but I think it's cute!
And outside of the red carpet whirl, super-preggy Fay-Ann Lyons made her bid to do the double at the Soca Monarch finals, performing in both the Power Soca and Groovy Soca categories at the Semi-finals. As usual, she did not hesitate to put a few loving licks in her hubby Bunji Garlin, the defending monarch, declaring that she and her child were coming for the crown when she performed Meet Super Blue.
From the Trinidad Express:
Later in the night, Fay-Ann Lyons created an even greater uproar when she performed "Meet SuperBlue." Everywhere in the Velodrome big flags were moving around as the people waved her on. Saying that she loved her husband Bunji and respected his talent, Lyons told the audience she was going to dethrone him come finals night. "Me and my child coming for that title and how it hang, it swing. Part will go Arima and part will go Point Fortin," Lyons declared as the crowd cheered.
Before Lyons exited the stage all the women in the audience sang an entire verse and chorus of the song as she stood listening to them. Before doing her Power Soca contender, Lyons performed her Groovy Soca entry, "Heavy T Bumper," in her bid to make it to the finals of both categories. Lyons has secured places in both categories of the competition and will therefore be doing double duty on the night.
Go Fay-Ann, go!
