Islandistas @ Met Costume Institute Ball

We're baaa-aack! ... With more pics of our picks from the Met Costume Institute Ball last night in New York City.

The winner of the night in the islandistas style stakes - and possibly overall - was Jennifer Lopez.

She looked gorgeous in her irridescent, glimmering gown by Zuhair Murad. The sweetheart neckline, the leaf detail in the skirt... perfection.

Do 'um Jenny!

JLo was right on target fashion wise as nude tones of greige (grey and beige) dominated the night - with Kate Hudson, Katy Perry, Jessica Alba, Sarah Jessica Parker, Gwen Stefani and Anne Hathaway all sporting variations of beige, cream, coral etc.

Eva Mendes,  went very differently style-wise with colours and patterns as opposed to neutrals and texture  in a rose-patterned Dolce & Gabbana gown with a fish-tail skirt - perfect for the curvy Cubana.

Fabulous at the Grammys - island folk

Island folk were fabulous at the Grammy Awards last night.

Bajan islandista Rihanna put the awfulness of last year's Grammy experience behind her, winning her second Grammy for rap-sung collaboration for Run This Town with Jay-Z and Kanye West. She kept it succint on the mic, saying thanks and giving a 'lift-up' to Solange's son/ Beyonce's nephew, the too-cute Juelz.

And of course her dress... was... stunning. Definitely going to be making lots of best dressed lists in her pale pink Elie Saab.

Too gorgeous. And the simple understated makeup with it is on point.

Melanie Fiona also looked beautiful in a black gown - she went for a very natural makeup look but she was glowing so much with happiness at being there that it just made us smile - like our fave lil cousin had finally got near her dream. Too sweet.

Islandistas at the AMAs

So the American Music Awards hit the air last night and everyone is still buzzing about it.

Adam Lambert's performance? Just... wow.

But would people have been so shocked if a raunchy female performer - say a Janet or even a Rihanna, did the same thing? Food for thought, eh?

Speaking of Rihanna, her performance outfit was... pretty risque. We're getting to expect that from Ri-ri, so really the question should be - where does this rank among her more out-there outfits?

Her red carpet outfit - a black and white Marchesa from their spring 2010 line and her red-eyed makeup was pushing the fashion envelope too, which is to be expected.

Islandistas on vacay and the red carpet

The glamour of the Golden Globe awards returned to Hollywood last night after being reduced to a press conference last year because of the writers' strike.

Latina islandistas Eva Mendes (Cuban-American) and Jennifer Lopez (boriqua - of course!) were both stunning on the red carpet . Eva wore a white Dior dress with a dramatic fan on the hip and J-Lo was in a slinky, daring gold Marchesa gown that reminds everyone of that Versace dress from back in her Diddy (or was he P.Diddy then? or Puff Daddy?) days.

Haitian islandista Garcelle Beauvais was present at one of the myriad after-parties in a dress that even though it was a bit prim and boring in cut, had such a gorgeous, lush print that it made up for it.

Far away from Hollywood, X-Factor winner Alexandra Burke is on her first vacation since winning the British singing contest and snagging the coveted Christmas number one (that is such a big deal for Brits - still don't get why). She and fellow X-Factor contestant Ruth Lorenzo are on vacay in Mauritius.

Looking fab too - still sticking to that X-Factor diet we see.

Speaking of Alexandra, Rihanna reportedly wants her to stay far away from her man, Chris Brown.

Apparently during X-Factor, Alexandra used to make no secret of her huge crush on Chris and it was all cute and giggles then.

Now... not so much.

According to the Daily  Mirror's 3 AM column, Rihanna banned Alexandra from an after-party after Chris performed at a show at London's O2 arena.

"Alex was mortified. She had no idea she had been banned from meeting her idol.

"She's a massive fan of Chris Brown – she said numerous times on The X Factor how much she fancies him and wants to meet him.

"Since she and Chris are both with Sony, she asked label bosses if they could arrange for her to meet him at the after-party.

"They said that was fine, they would sort it out.

Again... not so much.

Apparently, it's all part of Ri-ri keeping Chris on a short leash. It's not by accident or for work that Rihanna has been all over Britain with Chris since the New Year. The London Paper's thebuzz blog says she has a set of rules for him while he's on tour.
She has banned female members of his entourage from being alone with him in his room and said no girls can be there past midnight,” a source close to the star tells theBuzz.

We’re also told she doesn’t want to see any pictures of him dancing with girls in clubs, as she knows how far fans go to get his attention.

And to that we say - yuh damn right! Crack that whip! Her actions seem perfectly practical to us - after all, Chris is 19 and his teeny bopper fans are some other kind of crazy about him. The temptation for an ordinary 19 year old boy to cheat is huge, far less one that has coochie shamelessly thrown at him every single day.

So do what yuh got to do, girl.

Rihanna to start clothing line

Well it's about time...

According to Women's Wear Daily, the super-fly islandista is set to launch her own clothing line. It has been hinted at for a while, but she confirmed it three days ago in an interview with WWD at the Gucci show, during Milan Fashion Week.

Rihanna is set to follow in the footsteps of fellow pop star Gwen Stefani and launch her own clothing range. The Disturbia singer, who is a frequent front-row guest at runway shows, has confirmed she is working on her own designs. The sexy star has already dabbled in the accessories industry - she put her name to a range of umbrellas earlier this year (08) to coincide with her international hit of the same name. She tells fashion publication WWD, “I can’t say when it will be released, but it’s definitely going to happen. I’m not one to rush into anything. I want to take my time.” Earlier this year (08), Rihanna hinted she was pondering a fashion line, saying, “There might be a clothing line on the horizon, maybe underwear.” The star has also previously teamed up with retail chain H+M to design a range of casualwear as part of the Fashion Against Aids campaign.

We say 'about time' because though there are many, many, many, good-lord-too-many celebs who have their own clothing lines, there are very few who actually have an actually interesting and individual sense of style. Rihanna is one of the few. Gwen Stefani is another.

We would actually like to see a clothing line from Rihanna because we think it would definitely have its own identity, unlike so many of these celeb design labels.

In other news, let's welcome back Spanish-Caribbean islandista Jenny from the block. After giving birth to twins earlier this year, J.Lo was back to her fiercest at the Dolce and Gabban show in a lawdamercy white dress by the designers.

Dammit man. That is not even fair. To the gym we go...
